NZ Colorfest Weekend

Last weekend was the New Zealand Colorfest Facepainting competition. I thought I’d go along and enter. Argh! First contest ever, nerves! There were several competition age groups and a mask making one for the youngest (preschool and primary age). There was also supposed to be a lot of outdoor fun, games and activities, but Auckland turned on some of its waterworks and we all had to crowd inside. Unfortunate, but there’s not a lot you can do about it. It didn’t seem to phase the fellow strolling around on stilts much, even though he had to almost bend double to get through the doorways. At least the Lakehouse Takapuna is a lovely high ceilinged old building.
The theme was Asia Fantasia and the art was varied to say the least. There was some great work, there are some very talented people in New Zealand.
I have to say how extremely proud I am of how well my daughter managed being my model. Next time though I will find an adult model, all that sitting still for being painted and then being photographed and judged was a tough ask for a seven year old. I was forced to resort to bribery, desparately hoping the Sprite sugar rush wouldn’t make things worse.
Isn’t she beautiful though? In spite of the fact that my wee “Cherry Blossom Fairy” didn’t win, I was pleased with how she turned out. My design was certainly highly popular one with all the children who came to have a look. I had numerous parents ask if I could paint their daughters too! Not an option, I’m sure if I practiced a lot more I could get the time down, but doing all those flowers took me an hour this time. Reckon that’s a bit long for most kids parties? I don’t think I’ll be adding it to my standard book of faces any time soon!
This Kung-Fu Panda design took out first prize and my friend Juanette’s Kabuki Warrior came second!
